Da Martino
Get that new suit taken out if you must, but do not miss the Florentine steak at Da Martino. The three-inch-thick hunk of grass-fed beast arrives at your table with the bone still in, then carved with all due ceremony. Devour it with a side of roasted rosemary potatoes, but leave room for surprisingly avant-garde panna cotta with almonds and sour cherries.

ZenZero
Set on the roof terrace of an old palazzo that overlooks a peaceful square off the main road, ZenZero is the young people's eating place of choice in Catania. It's a welcome change from the world of pasta, serving international dishes like tempura or Argentine steak. It's also a good place for an aperitivo, and the flower-laden terrace is divine.

Taverna degli Amici
Expandable waist bands are going to be all the rage next season, if the eating habits of the fashion designers thronging the Amici are any indication. Prada, Etro, and Costume National converge here for lunch, and only naïve students from the nearby Design Institute choose the wan salad bar over the great grilled meats.

Braceria Escosazio
This place is a carnivore's heaven - a butcher's counter filled with every barbecued meat possible and an enormous grill. The specialities are bolpette (meatballs), gnummeriddu (liver wrapped in goat's intestines) and sausages. Make your selection at the counter and watch them grill it for you.

Osteria Tiresia
It's not hard to work out why the Tiresia is often full - excellent food, fair prices and a convivial faux-rustic setting. The emphasis is on meat here with steak, featuring in dishes such as the wonderful-sounding filetto ubriaco di sangiovese (fillet drunk on sangiovese red wine).

La Vigna Trattoria
Choose your meat, then watch it sizzle on the giant, open fireplace. Apart from possibly the bread, vegetarians will have little choice here. Less zealous carnivores can choose from the short pizza menu and a selection of homemade desserts.
