Puglia, Italy's gateway to the Orient, is a land forged in history by a mixture of civilisations and cultures. This enriching walking trip combines archeological and architectural treasures with hiking through valleys and along coastal paths surrounded by landscapes of red earth, olive groves and vineyards. See the unique dry stone cottages known as trulli in intriguing Alberobello and the cave houses known as Sassi in Matera. Explore the enchanting maze of narrow streets in the 'white city' Ostuni, the seaside village of Otranto facing the Adriatic and visit the elegant Baroque city of Lecce.

Itinerary

Day 1 Arrival in Lecce for sightseeing in Salento's baroque style regional capital
Make your own way to Lecce. On arrival at the train station you will be transferred to your accommodation a charming B&B in an ancient 17th century building, located in the historical centre of the city. This afternoon you are free to discover the main monuments of the capital of the Salento region, which are Baroque style. Dinner in a typical restaurant and overnight in Lecce.
Day 2 Visit gateway to the Orient, Otranto, and hike along the Adriatic coastline (4hrs)
The focus today is Otranto, the gateway to the Orient. Otranto is a little seaside village facing the Adriatic sea. Visit the "Tree of Life" mosaic in the cathedral of Otranto, one of the most amazing mosaic floors in Italy. Hike along the coastline, discovering flowers and Mediterranean vegetation and the "Saracens" watchtowers. Train back to Lecce to your B&B. 4 hours walking, 11km, ascent +100m, descent -100m
Day 3 Transfer to the charming hilltop village of Ostuni, overnight in Ostuni (2hrs)
This morning you take a train to Ostuni. This striking hilltop village, within touching distance of the seashore, is known as the "white city" due to its fortress of whitewashed building clustered together on the hillside. Ostuni's charm lies within the enchanting maze of Greek-style narrow streets, showing off some fine Mediterranean architecture. Dinner in a typical restaurant and overnight in hotel in Ostuni. 2 hours walking, 7km
Day 4 Discover Itria Valley and Locorotondo (5hrs)
In the morning, private transfer to Locorotondo, a beautiful and ancient little town, characterised by its white houses and gothic church. Today you discover the Itria Valley, walking along narrow tracks and passing between ancient olive trees, vineyards and trulli, all against the backdrop of a charming landscape. Arriving in Alberobello, a UNESCO World Heritage, there is time to explore this intriguing city populated by dry stone dwellings also known as “trulli”, surrounded by the beautifully exotic Itria valley. Dinner in a typical restaurant and overnight in hotel in Alberobello. 5 hours walking, 17km, ascent +150m, descent -150m
Day 5 Castellana Caves and guided visit of the Sassi area of Matera
Short train ride to Castellana Caves and optional guided visit of the caves, where you walk between extraordinary stalagmites and stalactites to the amazing "White Cave" that is 70m deep. Private transfer to Matera, a UNESCO listed site, for a guided visit of the Sassi area of the town. There will be a tasting of typical products at the end of the visit. Overnight in a "rock" hotel in the historical centre of Matera.
Day 6 Hike to discover the Murgia plateau and its 18th century rock churches (3hrs)
Take a wonderful hike to discover the Murgia plateau facing Matera. Admire the rock churches of the 8th century, painted with Byzantine frescoes. The landscape is composed of pastures and stone farmhouses, where it's possible to watch the flights of different types of falcons. Dinner in a typical restaurant and overnight in hotel. 3 hours walking, 7km, ascent +150m, descent -150m
Day 7 Transfer to Bari, visit the historical centre and the cathedral of Trani
Private transfer to Matera train station then train to Bari where you will have time to visit the historical centre of the city. Take time to view the elegant monuments and narrow streets made with multicoloured mosaics. There is an option to visit Trani and its amazing Cathedral in the afternoon. Overnight in hotel in Bari.
