  1. Moresko Hammam

Through the courtyard and out the back of a nondescript apartment building, you’ll find this lovingly run, friendly hammam. As well as a steam room, bathing facilities, massage and beauty treatments (including traditional sugar hair removal), you can relax in the peaceful lounge with mint tea and lokum (Turkish delight) or an aperitivo. Check for single-sex opening hours and bathing suit requirements.

    Bulgari Spa

This warm, enveloping space in the basement of the Antonio Cittero–designed hotel instils immediate calm. Espa aromatherapy treatments target pressure points and chakras; whether you’re a believer or not, there’s no doubt they will relax and rejuvenate a frazzled traveller. Make sure to amortise the sky-high prices with a dip in the gorgeous gold-mosaic lined pool or a lounge in the ethereal steam room.

    Habits Culti Spa

Culti’s ethno-sacred aesthetic lives large at this seriously sensual spa. The touted total well being, radiance and renewed internal resources don’t come cheap (prices start at €80 for a basic manicure) but this is no corner nail bar. Stone, wood and water are highlighted in the decor and treatments take their cues from the same elements, as well as utilising flowers, salts and mud.

    E’spa at Gianfranco Ferré

Luxurious surrounds - waxed stucco and shiny wood walls, a Bisazza glass-mosaic floor in black and gold, a private garden - aim for ‘refound sensuousness’. Forget about wrinkles and detox, just enjoy the moment: chromatherapy lights turn your shower into a liquid rainbow, and subtle aromatic oils pervade the air.

    Spa Guerlain at Hotel Baglioni

A spot of ‘body sublimation’ at this white but warm spa isn’t as against instinct as the name might suggest. Treatments range from the reassuringly conventional to the gently holistic, with hydrotherapy, Vichy showers and footbaths working their watery wonders.
