Lonely Planet review for Acqua Al 2

A long-standing favourite, this is a cheerful old eating den known for its assaggi di primi (mini portions of first courses for tasting). Although well populated with out-of-towners, it retains much of its atmosphere and still attracts Florentines.

    I Dream Of Tiramisu

    We stumbled upon Acqua Al 2 sans guidebook, but made reservations to return the following night for my boyfriends birthday. As our accommodation was a campground slightly out of the city centre with no electricity, and some variety of small night creature lurking outside our tent each night, the opportunity for a wonderful meal in a stylish and bustling restaurant was something we very much looked forward to. Acqua Al 2 did not disappoint.

    We were welcomed at the front door by the maitre'd who greeted my boyfriend with birthday wishes and led us to a corner table. Warm, crusty bread was brought to the table within moments of our arrival, (and constantly resupplied as we immediately polished it off with the tasty olive oil), a wonderful chianti was opened and poured and we settled in for a night of gastronomic delight.

    The waiter suggested the tasting plates of pasta, where we could try smaller portions of their pasta dishes allowing us to sample more of the flavours. We tried quite a few of the pasta dishes which were all delicious but the fluffy pillows of pesto gnocchi was by far the favourite. Throughout the night the waitstaff were attentive and helpful in their suggestions, especially the desert tasting plate which was truly phenomenal. The smooth dark chocolate mousse and lemon tart were amazing, but I am yet to find a tiramisu that can even compare to how luscious the one we were served that night was. After topping the night of with some shots of creamy limoncello, we were suitably stuffed and satiated!
