Lonely Planet review

A jewel of Renaissance architecture, this former monastery now serves as a very cushy boutique inn - vows of poverty no longer required. Its discrete entrance, marked only by a small bronze plaque, opens onto Piazza Santissima Annunziata, the most serene and arguably the most lovely of Florence's smaller piazzas.

Built in the 1520s by Antonio Sangallo, the Loggiata dei Serviti deliberately echoes Brunelleschi's ground-breaking Spedale dei Innocenti just across the piazza. The hotel has been very careful to preserve the original architecture both inside and out, including its arcaded entrance, its polychrome beamed ceilings, its vaulted stairways, and its creaking wood floors. An attractive and very Florentine combination of plum and ochre dominates the palette. Downstairs there is an attractive bar and a sitting room, which are both worth a linger. Upstairs, rooms are fitted with modern comforts, including attractive bathrooms, plush beds with jacquard-woven linens, and a combination of antique and antique-like furnishings. Most rooms have fine views onto the piazza. Note that singles, while well fitted-out, are very small.
