    Cantina Bentivoglio

Bologna’s top jazz joint, the Bentivoglio is a jack of all trades. Part wine bar (choose from over 500 labels), part restaurant (the daily prix-fixe menu costs €28) and part jazz club (there’s live music nightly), this much-loved institution oozes cosy charm with its ancient brick floors, arched ceilings and shelves full of wine bottles.

    Venice Jazz Club

Jazz is alive and swinging in Dorsoduro, where the resident Venice Jazz Club Quartet improvises funky tributes to Miles Davis and Charles Mingus and grooves on Italian jazz standards. Drinks are steep, so starving artists booze beforehand and arrive by 8pm to pounce on free cold-cut platters.

    Al Vapore

The single best place for a consistent programme of jazz, blues and other music is this spot in Marghera, on the mainland. Concerts start at 21:30 and finish at midnight, generally on Friday and Saturday. On other nights you're as likely to hear ethno-chill-lounge DJ mixes.
