Bagni Regina Giovanna
Sorrento famously lacks a proper beach, so consider heading to Bagni Regina Giovanna, a rocky beach about 2km west of town, set among the ruins of the Roman Villa Pollio Felix. It’s a picturesque spot with clear, clean water and it’s possible to walk here (follow Via Capo), although you’ll save your swimming (and sunbathing) strength if you get the SITA bus headed for Massa Lubrense.

Gelateria David
Impress your dinner-party pals with your homemade Italian gelateria by taking a course at this gelaterie. The third generation in the ice-cream business, David runs classes that last around an hour and culminate in your very own gelateria certificate. Times vary according to demand, so call or drop by to organise; David speaks excellent English. His specialities include the deliciously one-off 'Sorrento moon', with almond and lemons, and veneziana, a lemon, orange and mandarin sorbet; he also makes all the traditional flavours.

Sorrento Cooking School
You can opt for a serious culinary vacation here or one of their popular four-hour classes (€60) learning to make such Italian staples as pizza, ravioli and tiramisu (okay, more a sin than a staple) in a beautiful spot, surrounded by lemon trees. The class ends with a meal of the goodies prepared, accompanied by local wine.
