Friggitoria Vomero
The stuff of legend (it even boasts its own Facebook fan page), this spartan snack bar makes some of the city’s finest fritture (deep-fried snacks). Crunch away on deep-fried aubergines, potatoes and zeppole, frittatine di maccheroni (fried pasta and egg) and supplì di riso (rice balls). Located opposite the funicular, it’s a handy pit stop before legging it to the Certosa di San Martino.

La Cantinella
Fussy foodies flock here for sophisticated twists on classic dishes. At crisp linen tables they savour the likes of beef fillet with Marsala sauce and pork liver served with Saracen flour flan, and encrusted pork with apples and Parma ham drizzled in an Armagnac sauce. Desserts are equally luxe, and the lengthy and interesting wine list yields some excellent quaffs.

Antica Gastronomia Ferrieri
Opposite Stazione Centrale, this buzzing snack bar draws everyone from surly Russian maids to cautious American backpackers. Side by side they scoff down moreish snacks such as herb focaccia and pagniottiello, a hybrid pizza/bread roll filled with aubergine, tomatoes and fresh ricotta. There's a self-service restaurant upstairs.

One of a clutter of eateries along the Marina Grande seafront, Da Emilia is the archetypal family-run trattoria. It's welcoming and laid-back, and serves an uncomplicated menu of seafood classics - pasta with mussels and clams, fried squid and grilled fish. The food is delicious and the portions are huge.

Il Saraceno d’Oro
A busy, bustling place, the Saracen’s blend of cheery service, uncomplicated food and reasonable prices continues to please the punters. The pizzas are good, the pasta’s tasty and the desserts are sticky and sweet. The complimentary end-of-meal glass of limoncello makes for a pleasing epilogue.

Named after and housed in a 2000-year-old Roman cistern, this unpretentious trattoria is a perennial favourite. Owned by the larger-than-life Salvatore, whose memorable picture adorns the bottles of house wine, it’s good for traditional dishes like pasta with beans, veal cutlets and wood-fired pizzas.

Hardly the hole its name suggests, this Michelin-starred restaurant is housed in a former monks’ wine cellar. The emphasis is on innovative regional cooking, so expect modern combos such as pasta with rock-fish sauce or treccia (local cheese) and prawns. Reservations recommended.

Running the gamut from pizzas through pastas and risottos to meats, fish, salads and crepes, the menu here is the longest in town. If you don't fancy scrolling through the whole thing, the steak is excellent and the profiteroles come in a luxurious chocolate sauce.

One of Anacapri’s most consistently good restaurants, La Rondinella has a relaxed, rural feel. For something different try chef Michele’s linguine alla ciammura, a delicious pasta dish with a creamy white sauce of anchovies, garlic and parsley.
