Antica Osteria da Tonino
Just shy of 80, the quick-witted Tonino (nicknamed JR by his wife, who still runs the kitchen) is still going strong, just like his heirloom osteria. At the front, time-pressed signore pick up their takeaway orders and a bottle of red. At the few packed tables, Rubinacci suits, old-timers and the odd Nobel Prize winner (Dario Fo ate here) tuck into hearty, honest grub like rigatoni ragù e ricotta (rigatoni in a meat and ricotta sauce).

Castello
It could be the vino lining the walls, the piles of cookbooks or Norah Jones crooning in the background, but this place feels like home. Kick back with a steamy bowl of pappardelle (wide ribbon pasta) with courgette flowers and mussels or filetto al castello (veal in a creamy courgette sauce). Equally divine is the homemade zeppola, a doughy pie filled with fresh berries and custard.

Donna Teresa
Locals know exactly what they’re getting when they squeeze into this tiny, eight-table trattoria – traditional food as their nonna (grandma) would have cooked it. The limited menu changes daily, but you might find spezzatini al ragù (meat stew), polpette (meat balls) or salsicce al sugo (sausages in tomato sauce).
