    Lonely Planet review

Looks can be deceptive – especially in Matera. This cave boutique looks unremarkable from its streetside perch on the edge of the Sasso Caveoso, but you'll feel your jaw start to drop as you enter its luxurious entrails and spy the spectacle of Old Matera sprawling below a jutting terrace. Cavernous rooms sport mosaics, mood lighting and curtained four-poster beds.

Our independent authors have visited Il Belvedere and selected this as one of our recommended hotels in Matera.

    Description provided by property

Located just a few steps the Sassi di Matera UNESCO site, Il Belvedere is a 2-storey hotel without lift that boasts a furnished terrace with panoramic views of Matera.

An Italian-style breakfast is available daily and includes fruit juices, cappuccinos, and pastries. In summer it can be enjoyed on the terrace.

All air conditioned, the rooms come with flat-screen TV, minibar, and mosquito nets. The en suite bathroom is complete with hairdryer. They have exposed stone walls typical of Matera and free wired internet access is available.

Matera city centre is a 10-minute walk from the hotel, while the nearest sandy beach is a 40-minute drive away. Guests can enjoy discounted rates at a nearby partner car park.
