    Medea

If you're after something ceramic but are fed up with the ubiquitous range of gaudy yellow fruit bowls, then look no further. At this gallery-cum-laboratory-cum-shop, you'll find an interesting selection of original handmade vases, lamps, animals, figurines, plates and tiles. Particularly outstanding are the huge red and black vases by ceramic artist Ugo Marano. And if you're wondering, yes, they cost a bomb - for a life-sized vase expect to fork out in the region of around €12000.

    Profumi della Costiera

The limoncello produced and sold here is made with local lemons. Known to experts as sfusato amalfitano, they’re enormous – about double the size of a standard lemon. The tot is made according to traditional recipes, so there are no preservatives and no colouring. And it’s not just the owners who say so – all bottles carry the IGP (Indicazione Geografica Proteta; Protected Geographical Indication) quality mark. You may just see the bottling in progress when you visit; it takes place just at the back of the shop.

    Wine & Drugs

Despite the tongue-in-cheek name, no mind-altering substances are sold here, only grappa, organic olive oil, saffron and a good selection of local and international wines. There are also complimentary daily tastings of aged Parmesan dipped into similarly elderly 24-year-old balsamic vinegar. Check out the owner’s collection of baseball caps (over 400 at last count), sent by appreciative customers from around the world in exchange for a Ravello cap which is routinely included in any shipment.

    Umberto Carro

On offer here is a sumptuous display of locally produced ceramics to stress you – and your hand luggage – at check-in time; a better bet is to go for the shipping option. The colours and designs are subtle and classy, and there is a wide range of pieces available, ranging from magnificent urns to minute eggcups and quirky, brightly coloured ceramic animals and ornaments.

    L’Arco Antico

Amalfi’s connection with paper making dates back to the 12th century, when the first mills were set up to supply the republic’s small army of bureaucrats. Although little is made here now, you can still buy it and the quality is still good. This attractive shop sells a range of paper products, including beautiful writing paper, leather-bound notebooks and huge photo albums.

    La Botteguccia de Giovanni

A reliable place to come for handmade sandals made by craftsman Giovanni in his small workroom at the back of the shop. Choose the colour leather and any decorative bits and pieces you want (shells are particularly well suited to Positano somehow…), tell him your size and then nip round the corner for a cappuccino while he makes them. Prices start at around €50.

    La Bottego di Brunella

This shop is one of the reasons local women succeed in always looking so effortlessly chic. It is one of just a handful of boutiques here where the clothes are actually designed and made in Positano (most boutiques import despite the sometimes deceptive labelling). The garments here are made from pure linen and silks; the colours are earthy shades of cream, ochre, brown and yellow. There are two other branches in town, including a smaller boutique opposite Palazzo Murat.

    Il Ninfeo

Unabashedly tourist-geared, Il Ninfeo has a vast showroom displaying an excellent selection of ceramics, ranging from giant urns to fridge magnets. If they are not too busy, ask whether you can see the fascinating remains of a Roman villa under the showroom. It makes you realise just how much is hidden under this town.

    Cashmere

Although you may associate cashmere with more northern climes, this tiny shop in the Ravello backstreets is worth a visit to view the exceptional quality of the locally produced clothing here, made primarily from pure cashmere, as well as linen.

    Antonello della Mura

Fashionistas in the know come here for exquisite fashions designed by Antonello himself, who studied at London’s prestigious St Martins College of Art and Design. Inspired by Roman frescoes, the printed scarves are stunning enough to frame, as well as being hand finished, pure silk and Hermès quality (at around €100 less). The feather-light women’s fashions are similarly irresistible.

    Anastasio Nicola Sas

Unless you’re flying long haul, gourmet goodies can make excellent gifts. Here, among the hanging hams, you’ll find a full selection, ranging from local cheese and preserves to coffee, chocolate, limoncello and every imaginable shape of pasta. There’s also a collection of fruit-scented soaps and natural shampoos, perfumes and moisturisers.

  14. Ceramica Artistica Solimene

This vast factory outlet, the most famous ceramics shop in town, sells everything from eggcups to ornamental mermaids, mugs to lamps. Even if you don’t go in, it’s worth having a look at the shop’s extraordinary glass and ceramic facade. It was designed by Italian architect Paoli Soleri, who studied under the famous Californian ‘organic’ architect Frank Lloyd Wright.
