With a little imagination you could almost picture Humphrey Bogart leaning against one of the arched doorways, puffing on a pipe, as if the lobby was an incarnation of Rick's Cafe. More than any other hotel in the city, the American Colony does its best to whisk you back through time to Jerusalem circa 1900, with its period architecture, elegant furnishings and colonial air.
A walk through the hallowed halls of this grand edifice is a history lesson in itself, with photos and clippings about the hotel and its former residents. Those who opt for the junior suites are treated to domed ceilings, arched windows, cushions, alcoves and wrought-iron frame beds. Rooms in the newer block lack traditional decor, but are no less luxurious. The hotel's roll call speaks for itself. Illustrious former guests include the likes of Winston Churchill, Jimmy Carter, Ingrid Bergman, Bob Dylan, John Steinbeck and Mikhail Gorbachov. The East Jerusalem location is not the most upmarket, although several other five-star hotels have been popping up in the neighbourhood. All up, this might be your best bet if you've got a well-endowed wallet and are tempted by the truly unique.
