Lonely Planet review for Museum of Free Derry

The Museum of Free Derry, just off Rossville St, chronicles the history of the Bogside, the civil rights movement and the events of Bloody Sunday through photographs, newspaper reports, film clips and the accounts of first-hand witnesses, including some of the original photographs which inspired the murals of the People's Gallery.

    A museum for the times

    chocol8 recommends this,

Am not a huge fan of museums of a particular theme but we went into this museum purely because the murals surrounding it had us wanting to know more about Bloody Sunday. Let's face it, whatever you think of Bono and his posse, they've done a good job of informing the world about this event which happened in an otherwise quiet little town in the north of northern Ireland. The Free Derry museum is brilliant! A must see for any Londonderry visitor. It tells the history of the troubled times in the 70's leading up to Bloody Sunday and the consequence it had on the country and it's people. It tells of the freedom fighters and does it in a way that's only mildly interactive but (dare I say morbidly?) fascinating and you'd be a hard ass to come out not being moved at the plight of the locals in that era. The other thing to note is the museum staff, they obviously know their stuff and love to share what they know........and any story is worth listening to with that accent.
