Lonely Planet review for Ulster Museum
If the weather washes out a walk in the Botanic gardens, head instead for the nearby Ulster Museum. The museum was closed for redevelopment at the time of research, but should be open again by the time you read this.

A good, diverse, collection represents Northern Ireland
eyeseverchanging recommends this,
Good for all ages, the museum never ceases to be interesting. An odd collection of artefacts and displays keeps interest as the museum unravels the history (in many meanings of the word) of Northern Ireland. Beginning with the recent Troubles (a very moving exhibit) and journey back several ages to mammoth teeth and primitive tools, the museum easily takes you on a fascinating journey. Even in the animal portion, the animals featured are native to the area.
Also, the tea from the cafe is quite nice.
