Lonely Planet review for Botanic Gardens
The green oasis of Belfast’s Botanic Gardens is a short stroll away from Queen's University. Just inside the Stranmillis Rd gate is a statue, who helped lay the foundation of modern physics and who invented the Kelvin scale that measures temperatures from absolute zero (–273°C or 0°K).

An oasis just outside the bustle of central Belfast

On my first visit to Belfast, we wandered across the Botanical Gardens by accident when we were checking out Queen's University which sits alongside the park. It was a perfect distraction from the centre of Belfast which was teeming with business and shopping hustle and bustle. The gardens on the other hand were so peaceful, few people were there, the occasional dog walker or university student as it was early morning but it was teeming with local urban animal life such as birds and squirrels. Being near the University there were some cool cafes around the area as well. We spent a good hour there but wished we had longer.
