Kelly's Complex
The North's top clubbing venue regularly features DJs from London and Manchester, and attracts clubbers from as far afield as Belfast and Dublin. Plain and small-looking from the outside, the TARDIS effect takes over as you enter a wonderland of five bars and three dance floors. It's been around since 1996, but Lush! is still one of the best club nights in Ireland.
The complex is on the A2 just east of Portrush, beside the Golf Links Holiday Park.

Kremlin
Gay-owned and operated, the Soviet kitsch–themed Kremlin is the heart and soul of Northern Ireland's gay scene. A statue of Lenin guides you into Tsar, the pre-club bar, from where the Long Bar leads into the main clubbing zone, Red Square. There's something going on seven nights a week – Revolution (admission £5 to £7) on Saturdays is the flagship event, with DJs mixing up dance, house, pop and commercial till 3am.

Thompson's
The best night at Thompson's is Friday's Groovilicious, with DJs laying down everything from funky techno to breakbeat to classic acid house, while Faith plays club classics late into Sunday night for those who don't want the weekend to end. The club, hidden away in the city centre, regularly hosts international DJs.

Think Tank
Dance DJs, Battle of the Bands nights, visiting live acts and numerous other assorted festivities make up the menu at this basement club in Temple Bar – Strictly Handbag, Dublin’s longest running club night, takes place on Monday nights and still draws them in with its fun mixed bag of ’80s tunes.

Renard’s
Run by Colin Farrell’s godfather, and Colin’s (and other celebs’) favourite den of iniquity when in town, Renard’s is an intimate club with a strict door policy when busy. Music is mainly house, with soul, funk and jazz making the odd appearance.

Rogue
Relative newcomer on the block, Rogue is an intimate two-floored venue and home to the Bodytonic crew, who specialise in expertly mixed disco, house and electro. Expect to hear melodic and deep house and techno at the excellent Discotonic on Saturday nights.

Stiff Kitten
If the student union is too grungy a venue for your tastes, head for the Stiff Kitten, a stylish bar and club under the same management as Shine. Same serious attitude to the music, but it's distinctly glitzier, appealing to an over-25 crowd.

GPO
On Wednesday, GPO cranks out ’80s and ’90s tunes; the rest of the week, it’s house, R&B, indie and hip hop. It’s a favourite with students, who get free admission most nights.

Fusion
The beer garden is a big pull here, as is the heaving disco, which runs from Thursday to Sunday night with a mix of '60s, rock, house and dance music. Can you say alcopop?
