Arnott's
Occupying a huge block with entrances on Henry, Liffey and Abbey Sts, this is our favourite of Dublin's department stores. It stocks virtually everything you could possibly want to buy, from garden furniture to high fashion, and it's all relatively affordable.

Brown Thomas
Soak up the Jo Malone-laden rarefied atmosphere of Dublin's most exclusive store, where presentation is virtually artistic. Here you'll find fantastic cosmetics, shoes to die for, exotic homewares and a host of Irish and international fashion labels such as Balenciaga, Stella McCartney, Lainey Keogh and Philip Treacy. The 3rd-floor Bottom Drawer outlet stocks the finest Irish linen you'll find anywhere.

Clery's & Co
This elegant department store is Ireland's most famous retailer, a real Dublin classic. Recently restored to its graceful best, it has sought to shed its conservative reputation by filling its shelves with funkier labels to attract younger buyers.

Debenham's
This UK giant hit these shores in 2006; bold and glass-fronted on the outside with street-smart fashion labels like Zara, Warehouse and G-Star inside, as well as the obligatory homewares and electrical sections.

Dunnes Stores
A favourite choice with Irish mothers for its affordable everyday family clothing. The Savida fashion range is remarkably on the pulse though and their excellent homewares department is giving Habitat a run for its money. Look for branches across the city.

Marks & Spencer
Good-quality clothing and virtually everything else that the body and house might need - at affordable prices - make this British chain store one of Dublin's most popular. There's a supermarket in the basement and a popular café on the ground floor.

Penney's
Ireland's cheapest department store is a north-side favourite, a place to find all kinds of everything without paying a fortune for it - it's the best place in town for men's socks and jocks. The stuff here isn't guaranteed to last, but at prices like these, why quibble over quality? There's also another branch at 26 O'Connell St.

Roches Stores
A massive redesign of both the store and its contents have catapulted this formerly frumpy department store to near the top of the cool queue. Its hip status is in no small way due to the presence of Zara, the spectacularly successful Spanish label.
