The biggest selection of magazines and foreign newspapers in the whole country can be found on the ground floor of this huge bookshop near the GPO, along with literally dozens of browsers leafing through mags with ne'er a thought of purchasing one.

It's across the street from the side entrance to Trinity College, so conveniently this large bookshop specialises in academic tomes, but you'll also find a good selection of other books. In the basement is a massive stationery shop.

The mother of all Dublin bookstores has books on every conceivable subject for every kind of reader spread across its three huge floors, including a substantial Irish section (fiction, history, contemporary issues) on the ground floor.

All manner of murder mystery and crime novels are in this small specialist bookstore, which has categorisation down to a fine art - choose from historical mystery, romantic crime, sci-fi mystery, true crime and more.

Sells books covering the whole history of Irish and European art.

A small bookshop specialising in Irish history books, both old and new. Other titles, covering a range of subjects, include a number of beautiful, old, leather-bound editions.

Waterstone's
Although it is large and multistoreyed, Waterstone's somehow manages to maintain that snugly, hide-in-a-corner ambience that book lovers adore. The broad selection of books is supplemented by five bookcases of Irish fiction, as well as poetry, drama, politics and history. There are book-signings every Thursday evening; check board outside for details. There's also a lovely café on the second floor.
