Lonely Planet review for Gravediggers (aka Kavanagh’s)

The gravediggers from the adjacent Glasnevin Cemetery had a secret serving hatch so that they could drink on the job – hence the pub’s nickname. Founded in 1833 by one John Kavanagh and still in the family, this pub is one of the best in Ireland, virtually unchanged in 150 years. In summer time the green of the square is full of drinkers basking in the sun, while inside the hardened locals ensure that ne’er a hint of sunshine disturbs some of the best Guinness in town. An absolute classic.

    Spooky Secret

if wanting to visit a 'true' Dublin pub...this is it! no TV no music, conversation is king, the locals love to tell a story, a traditional bar, no stools! with real Dubs, this bar has been in many many films, T.V adverts and the beginning and end to many stories, next door to the famous cemetery, and near the Botonical gardens it's a haven in summer with a lovely green, the lounge has very tasty and reasonable food, you'll be surprised by the flavours, lunch is fron 12 -3.30pm, tapas after 6pm this pub has been in the same family since 1833 and you're bound to meet a n
member of the family as three generations work there at any one time. check out the guest book. A true Dublin pub with real 'Dubs' famous for it's pint o plain.. well worth a visit. Please note they don't take cards cash only, put you'll be hard pushed to spend a lot.
