Introducing Southern Wicklow

Southern Wicklow takes in the area south of Wicklow City, including the Vales of Clara and Avoca. The beautiful Vale of Avoca can get busy with tour groups, so time your visit outside summer to avoid the hordes. If you had you heart set on a handmade blanket for baby, the little Avoca village is just the place; its mill has been cranking out woolens and linens since 1723. Just outside the village of Rathdrum is the huge estate of Avondale House, where the great Irish political leader Charles Stewart Parnell was born. The estate's grounds and parkland make for a perfect picnic spot, and are marked with walking trails. You can also follow the Avoca down to the sea at Arklow, a pleasant port town.
