Gougane Barra Forest Park Getting there & around

Getting there & away

It ain’t easy on public transport. There’s a Monday to Saturday bus service (3.15pm, two hours) from Cork to Ballingeary 5km away; if you’re staying at the Gougane Barra hotel the staff can pick you up from there.

There’s also a Saturday-only 8am Macroomto Ballingeary bus, arriving in time to connect with the 9am Gougane Barra bus. The bus departs from Gougane Barra at 4.40pm Saturday, connecting with the 5pm bus to Macroom.

The Macroom tourist office (026 43280; summer only) can help with accommodation in town if needed. Alternatively, take a taxi (026 41152) from Macroom for around €30, or organise a tour from Bantry.

The park is signposted on the R584 after Ballingeary. Returning to the main road afterwards and continuing west, you’ll travel over the Pass of Keimaneigh and emerge on the N71 at Ballylickey, midway between the Beara Peninsula and the Sheep’s Head Peninsula.
