Tourism is not the first concern in Castletownbere (Baile Chais Bhéara), and as a result, there is a refreshing appeal to the every­dayness of the place. The town is home to one of Ireland’s largest fishing fleets and retains the bustle of a working port.

The helpful tourist office (70054; www.bearatourism.com ; Main St; Tue-Sat) is just outside the Church of Ireland. Beara Action Group (70880; www.bearainfo.com ; per 30/60min €3.5/4.5) has internet access. On Main St, you’ll find a post office with bureau de change, an Allied Irish Bank with an ATM, and a string of pubs. O’Shea’s Laundrette (70966; Main St; 9am-6pm Mon-Fri, from 9.30am Sat) charges €1 per pound for washing.

    There' not much public transport between villages in Beara, as mentioned a public bus runs from Castletownbere to Adrigole, Glengarriff…

    Probably finished your trip at this stage so how did you get on? I would have gone for Kenmare as well as it has lots of good restaurants…
