Travel with a guitar is one of the best ways to meet people and make friends, it can be a little humbling though since you are bound to meet people who play better than you do.

Three days of relaxation in Bintan
Blog: nateniale { reflections on my travels and everything else I love } - 22 January 2011
"Another suburb in Singapore" - That is what they call Bintan Resorts which is a section in Bintan Island in Indonesia. That was one of the reason why I had been reluctant to go to Bintan after more than 5 years in Singapore, although it was just a 45-minute ferry ride away. When we suddenly found ourselves free one of the weekends in between many hectic weeks, we decided to plan a 3-day getaway in Bintan. (Well, it was mainly because all the flights to elsewhere were expensive at such short notice!)

I am in charge
Blog: 2 Wheels - 1 World - 0 Money - 15 October 2010
I am on open waters, steering the ship. Countless passengers, along with goods and vehicles are clueless on the decks below me. I am standing there, operating the steering wheel, manoeuvring tons of steel from Sumatra to Java in a self-assured way, as if I had years of experience. The captan lies in his hammock, smokes a cigarette and the cox is out getting drinks. I only poked my head in to say “Hello”, one thing led to another and now look at me. The Indonesian ‘curiosity’ is bigger than the fear of accidents.

I can see the end, but it’s never going to be over
Blog: 2 Wheels - 1 World - 0 Money - 10 October 2010
I was able to score a two months visa for Indonesia. It’s a big country, much bigger than I thought and 2 months time will only be enough to give me an idea of whether I wanna come back here and explore more. Indonesia consists of 17.000 islands of which two thirds are inhabited. That means 5600 islands are especially interesting, because there’s no one going to say: “Hello Mister, where are you from?” So, if I built a raft around Marianne, sailed to these non-inhabited islands and spent one day on each isle, it would take me 15 years.

Men And The Wild
Blog: 2 Wheels - 1 World - 0 Money - 28 September 2010
It very much is a breath-taking experience to observe wild animals, but a little bit risky too. When I came a little bit too close to one of the Orang-Utans, he aggressively swung over to see if I am a threat to his territory. I didn’t want to be of course and quickly withdrew. The local guides want it to be an amazing experience for us tourists and attract the animals with bananas and lychees. I am very grateful for the excitement from watching these wild animals, but where does it lead to?

Bertua, Bertua, Anakku
Blog: I don't wash my hair - 19 August 2010
Bertua’s name makes my mouth feel airy, a thin flutter as the r rolls. He steps towards me as though I am a frog he is about to capture. Hopi macone, he whispers. He is teaching me to speak.

The Art of Eating
Blog: See Simi Travel Blog - 5 July 2010
Having enjoyed many meals alone while on the road, I like to watch people eat. Not what they are eating really, but what they are doing while they eat. This often makes me compare things to Montreal, my hometown and a real “foodie” city. At home we are all chefs, or so we pretend to be when we dine in. Meals are planned ahead of time, researched on the Internet. We watch cooking shows on a network entirely dedicated to food. Our magazines and weekend newspapers include a section on dining.

oh lo lo lo lo… that’s a big snake.
Blog: Barefoot Inked - 29 March 2010
I’ve been sick again, something tropical, some sort of flu, a spider bite and swollen lips… a cough and generally bedridden for two days. It’s ok though, my friends assure me I’m not missing much, no swell, rainy weather and low season is keeping everyone bored stupid… so at least I’m not missing out on [...]

Photo tour of West Sumatra
Blog: PocketCultures - 3 February 2010
This is a guest post by Kaja Dutka. All photos are also by Kaja. Two years ago I got an opportunity to study in Indonesia, on the island of Sumatra. Many people associate Indonesia with Bali and Java islands – the most touristic places in Indonesia. In fact Indonesia has more than 17,000 islands in total. Fewer people get the opportunity to discover the beauty and cultural diversity of Sumatra.

Two Months in Indonesia – a Round-up
Blog: Itinerant Londoner - 19 January 2010
I planned my round the world trip around spending at least 6 weeks in certain countries rather than trying to rush around and do too much. Out of all the countries in South East Asia, Indonesia was the obvious choice to spend that amount of time in. But apparently it was just the obvious choice for [...]

I wanna hold your (furry) hand
Blog: Itinerant Londoner - 17 January 2010
Lake Toba was a pretty lovely place to spend a couple of days chilling out, but I was really only in Sumatra for one reason: Orang Utans. A couple of hours north of sprawling (and not particularly exciting) Medan is the tiny little village of Bukit Lawang. It’s a charming little place, but it’s not the [...]

Apparently in many places in the country from whence I came, it is now snowing. I see these messages popping up all over Facebook, gchat, and Skype: "Snow!" or the more enthusiastic "SNOW!" or the resigned and sullen "snow."

Skinny dipping and simple pleasures
Blog: I don't wash my hair - 8 December 2009
Last week, Jenny and I took advantage of our three-day weekend to spend some time out of Kota Jambi. We caught a night bus to Bukit Tinggi (actually we caught two night buses, as we were rudely awakened by in the middle of the night, herded off one bus, and shoved on to another). That second bus was my lucky bus, as I was somehow awarded the best seat in the house -- the space behind the last row, that little shelf that is perfect for either luggage or an extremely sleepy person, such as I was at the time.

Traveling Sumatra
Blog: Travelicious - 16 August 2009
“You are eating Indonesian food?!?” “We thought foreigner only ate toast all day long!” This little scenario played out in a tiny warung somewhere in Sumatra where we duly sat eating very authentic local cuisine. A bunch of Indonesians were thoroughly amused and surprised by us “white people” sitting there eating their kind of food – and we even seemed to like it! Of course we liked it – Sumatra is renowned for its delicious, if a bit spicy, padang food.

In The Crater Of A Supervolcano
Blog: Curves and Levels - 27 July 2009
Fortunately, the operator practiced a sedate and incremental philosophy where twisty mountain roads were concerned - thus the relatively short drive required the rest of the day, but our knuckles weren't so white when it was over. He even stopped along the way to let us stretch our legs and drink in the spectacular vista below (note active volcano in the far distance).

Jungle Sanctuary
Blog: Curves and Levels - 14 March 2009
We were on the great, fabled island of Sumatra, having been carried across from Malaysia with great speed on a loud, smoke-belching passenger boat, now heading inland about 75 kms. as a crow might fly west of Medan or about three hours uphill by rough road into the rainforest at the southern boundary of Gunung Leuser National Park.
