Kuta & Seminyak
Kuta & Legian
North of Kerobokan
The capital of Bali, Denpasar, has been the focus of much of the island’s growth and wealth over the last 20 years. It has an important museum, an arts centre and lots of shops. Denpasar means ‘next to the market’, and the main market (Pasar Badung) is the biggest and busiest in Bali.
A groovy thatched cafe off Jl Abimanyu, Delicious Onion has a long menu of rice and noodle dishes, many featuring the tasty house chicken. The long patio is good for lounging; some nights it morphs into a low-key club replete with DJ.
Aims higher than its neighbour Double Six in terms of decor – and drink prices. If you own a Ferrari, you'll go to this house- and concept-heavy club and boast about it. If you don't, you'll lie.
A huge pool with a view of Double Six Beach anchors this sort of high-concept club (alcohol-branded singlets not allowed!) which has parties and events around the clock. Beds, loungers and VIP areas surround the pool; at night some of Bali's best DJs spin theme nights.
Simply fun – albeit with falsies. Drag queens rock the house, the crowd lining the street and the entire neighbourhood with songs amped to 11 nightly. Surprisingly intimate, it's a good place to lounge about for a few.
Ku De Ta
Ku De Ta teems with Bali’s beautiful people (including those whose status is purely aspirational). Scenesters perfect their ‘bored’ look over drinks during the day, gazing at the fine stretch of surf right out the back. Sunset brings out crowds, who snatch a cigar at the bar or dine on eclectic fare at tables. The music throbs with increasing intensity through the night.
The Manchego cheese comes direct from the Iberian Peninsula at this tapas place, which also has more substantial meals of steaks and paella. Dine in the twinkly garden or in the open-sided room with Moorish hints. A good selection of reds washes it all down.
Ignoring the strip-mall location, enjoy traditional Balinese dishes at this small cafe run by chef Nyoman Sudiyasa (who also has a cooking school here). The multicourse rijsttafel is a symphony of tastes, including the addictive babi kecap (pork in a sweet soy sauce) and tum bebek (minced duck in banana leaf).
Sate Bali runs an excellent Balinese cooking course taught by noted chef Nyoman Sudiyasa. Students learn to prepare Balinese spices and sambals, which are then used to flavour duck, fish and pork dishes. Not up to attending school? The restaurant is delicious.
Lunch goes swimmingly at this authentic warung specialising in seafood. An array of grilled fish awaits; if you prefer fowl over fin, the satay ayam is succulent and a bargain. Hugely popular at lunch; try to arrive right before noon.
A sweet little open-air shopfront warung in the midst of cacophonous nightlife. A dear husband-and-wife team cook Indo classics simply and well. It's all fresh and tasty.
