    Pontianak makes you appreciate the place you live, much more

    The one redeeming feature about Pontianak is its people. They are genuine, friendly and seemingly happy, a truly remarkable feat considering their surrounds. So it's worth risking your life to cross the roads where anarchy reigns to catch a glimpse of how the other half live: which is largely out of wooden constructed houses propped on jettys over the river, in which they swim and bathe. And drink, and cook and everything else. And where they chain up their pets - which aren't dogs or cats or even ducks, but monkeys. Illegally. It's utter chaos, but while there is little else to do in Pontianak when you're waiting to fly the hell out, spend an hour or so watching life on the river, before risking yours once more on those roads.
