Lonely Planet review for Equator Monument

Grown from a simple marker in 1928 into a goofy collage of circles and arrows with a huge replica outside marking its spot, Patung Khatulistiwa or Equator Monument makes much - too much - of Pontianak's geographical draw. It draws crowds every equinox to experience shadowless sunlight.

Take a bis kota (intercity bus) from outside Kartika Hotel or an opelet (local minivan) from Siantan terminal heading northwest. Patung Khatulistiwa is alongside the highway, and, believe us, you can't miss it.

Standing on the equator is cool!

    busman7 recommends this,

Definitely worth the effort to visit Pontianak, the monument + other sights in the area if you are lucky enough to make it to Borneo.

To make it even more memorable take a Pelini ship to Jakarta to enter this nation of islands in an appropriate manner.

    Disappointing, even for Pontianak

    kylielovesrangas does not recommend this,

If this is the biggest attraction in Pontianak, I would well advise giving this place a wide berth. It's fortunate to sit directly on the equator which they've used as a selling point - hardly a redeeming quality, for the air is a thick as pea soup without any of the features that make oppressive heat bearable, such as pristine forests or swim-able waters. Token nod to its position is a huge cement pylon bursting from a roundabout on a main thoroughfare. Don't go out of your way to see this: your driver will pass it directly on your way to the airport, which you probably can't reach soon enough.
