Lonely Planet review for Museum Wayang
This puppet museum has one of the best collections of wayang puppets in Java and its dusty cabinets are full of a multitude of characters. The collection includes puppets from not only Indonesia but also China, Vietnam, India, Cambodia and Europe, and masks used by dancers. There are free wayang performances here on Sunday at 10am.

Beautiful collection of Wayung puppets dating back 300 years
sometimesiamnotme recommends this,
Beautiful collection of Wayung puppets dating back up to 300 years. The curator of the museum is a puppeteer himself and his family, going back six generations, has been creating and performing the traditional Javanese puppet shows. Unfortunately, as he says, his children are more interested in playstation than maintaining his families heritage, but they are training new students in the art. It is definitely worth a visit to see these highly detailed pieces and to support an artistic technique that would be sad if lost.
