Scooby Doo Bar & Cafe
In a metaphor for the island, the cast-off couches on the sand are gone, replaced by tidy tables with white tablecloths under umbrellas. The menu features fresh seafood brought up from the fishing boats. It still does a good drinks business for sunset, moon or navel gazing.

Toke Café
The glass-enclosed kitchen at this mellow place turns out some good grilled seafood, including ikan pepes (fish with Balinese spices); there are also Indo specialties. It's got a nice old bar and is a good place for a cocktail or a glass of wine.

B Couple Bar n' Grill
A vibrant mix of upscale local families and a swath of tourists (menus are even in Russian) tuck into Jimbaran-style grilled seafood at this slick operation. Pool tables and live music add to the din while flames flare in the open kitchens.

Indo-National
Kerry and Milton Turner's popular restaurant is a home away from home for legions of fans. Grab a cold one with the crew up front at the bar for a sweeping view of Legian's action. Dine at the well-lit tables or at a secluded one out the back. Order the heaping grilled seafood platter and Bali's best garlic bread; the prawn toast is tops. Toss back a few Bintangs and see how many world monuments you can name amid captivating frescos.

La Lucciola
This beachside bistro is near the temple and secluded on all sides except the one that counts: the ocean. Stylish sunset-watchers enjoy good views of the surf from the 2nd floor. The menu is a creative fusion of international fare with an accent on seafood. Beguiling drinks from the bar may have you running across the green lawn to frolic in the ocean.

Pantai
It's location, location, location here at this dead-simple beachside bar and grill. The food is purely stock tourist (seafood, Indo classics, pasta etc) but the setting overlooking the ocean is idyllic. There's none of the pretence (or prices) of the hotel cafes common down here. Follow the beach path south past the big Ramada Bintang Bali resort.

Sardine
Seafood fresh from the famous Jimbaran market is the star at this elegant yet intimate, casual yet stylish restaurant in a beautiful bamboo pavilion. Open-air tables overlook a private rice field that is patrolled by Sardine's own flock of ducks. The inventive bar is a must. The menu changes to reflect what's fresh. Booking is vital.

Teba Mega Cafe
Lots of special platters and a local fave. In fact it's so popular they added 'Mega' to the name. Nice shady beach trees.

Warung Bamboo
Built from just that.

Warung Sobat
Set in a sort of bungalow-style brick courtyard, this old-fashioned restaurant excels at fresh Balinese seafood with an Italian accent (lots of garlic!). First-time visitors feel like they've made a discovery, and if you have the sensational lobster (a mere 100,000Rp; order in advance), you will too.

Mangalla Restaurant
Well-priced seafood, pizza and fresh local fare are popular here. Relax on the comfy rattan chairs.

Sanur Bay
You can hear the surf and see the moonlight reflecting on the water at this classic beachside seafood grill, set on the sand amid palm trees and fishing boats.

Depot Segara
Fresh seafood such as barracuda, marlin and snapper is prepared in a variety of ways at this popular cafe. Enjoy harbour views from the slightly elevated terrace. In a town where casual is the byword, this is the slightly nicer option.

Warung Dolphin
Right on the beach, this cheery hang-out for dolphin-tour skippers serves a killer grilled seafood platter (which was probably caught by the guy next to you). There's live acoustic music many nights and a few other cheery warung nearby.

Mama Putu's
A long-running seafood cafe where the menu changes depending on what's fresh (actually the menu stays the same but what's available changes…). Ask for extra garlic and don't miss – of all things – the sides of coleslaw.

Cianjur
Big, airy and cool, this shiny upmarket restaurant has Balinese seafood in an array of preparations (crispy, grilled, steamed or wrapped in a banana leaf). It's hugely popular with families and groups of government workers.

Lotus Pond Restaurant
The Sanur branch of the Lotus empire is in a high-thatched building surrounded by lotus ponds (of course). The menu features pastas, wood-fired oven pizzas, seafood and Indonesian dishes. At night it glows and there are cultural displays.

Kwizien
The big news in Lovina dining is this excellent place run by the folks behind the much-lauded Café des Artistes in Ubud. The location back from the road has a relaxed elegance, which sets the mood for a perusal of the long wine list. Grilled seafood tops the menu highlighted by creative Indonesian fare. The tuna is a treat.

Benno's Restaurant
Looks over the water and has a long seafood menu. Try the chilli crab.

Warung Rasta
Right on a strip of beach, a growing number of tables, chairs and picnic benches mix with fishing boats. The menu not surprisingly leans towards simply grilled fresh seafood; given the name, the endless loop of music shouldn't surprise either. It's run by dudes who have clearly realised that lounging around here all day beats fishing. That snorting you hear is a nearby pen housing worried-looking pigs.
