Lonely Planet review for Neelkantha Mahadev Temple
Follow the dedicated pilgrims who take water from the Ganges to offer at Neelkantha Mahadev Temple, a 7km, three-hour walk along a forest path from Swarg Ashram. Neelkanth (Blue Throat) is another name for Shiva, who once drank poison churned up from the sea by gods and demons, which turned his throat blue. A much longer road (17km) via Lakshman Jhula also goes to the temple. A jeep taxi costs a small price to return.

The temple has a very special Shiva Linga made of mercury

Situated at a short distance from Rishikesh, it is important pilgrimage destination for devout Hindus, especially during the rainy season - "Shravan' month as per Hindu Calender

so cool and really fun to see all the shrines. i want to go back! but the hike felt much longer than 7km, however. I think it might be closer to 12km (much of it up steep hill) from Laxman Jhula!

I've been there many a times, the place is so sacred that any question asked in the temple does get answered soon, its up to you to interpret the message he sends across by any means. but if u are true to yourself, he is true to you........i mean it....best time is starting of summer and try to avoid rush in July due to lakhs of Kanwaria in shivratri time. If you are most interested to see the shivratri, better make arrangements 2 weeks in advance
