To help foreigners, from today they are allowed to exchange Rs5000 per week in old notes (and they'll probably waste 3 passport pages noting it).
And until Dec 15th, govt entities will be accepting old 500s (only) which will better the acceptance on the street.
EDIT: Making this a sticky topic to consolidate some of the discussion, as we now have nearly twenty currency topics in the past two weeks.

Hi, I know there is much posted on these two topics, but I'm traveling to India with a small group of university students so I just want the very latest intel.
1. We are a traveling for three weeks and arriving in Delhi, onward to Jaipur and working with NGO between Jaipur and Ajmer. I need to get a SIM card for my iphone6, mostly to be used for texting my colleagues, communicating with drivers, possibly booking Ubers, and emergencies. I don't really plan to call home. Otherwise I will depend on…
I am planning a 3 month trip in India and would love local/experienced knowledge as well as any other advice the community can give! I plan to travel from Mid August to Mid November so weather considerations are also a factor. I've traveled quite a bit globally, but never for longer then 2 or 3 weeks so this is my first long trip.
Here is my rough itinerary and rough amounts of time I plan to spend in each area. If this is too much/not enough time please let me know, as well as sites…
I was planning to fly to India 10 days from now, and started filling my visa application yesterday.
One of the thing they request is a "reference" name, number and address in India. I do not really have any contacts over there, how am I supposed to deal with that ?
Other thing, I was told it could take 2 weeks to go through, is it usually that long ?
Btw, I'm currently in Australia, but am French if that makes any difference. And I was planning to land in Tiruchirappalli.
I was reading elsewhere that in October, J&K changed the law regarding PAPs for foreigners in Ladakh, particularly in parts of the Nubra Valley. I've been trying to find info (both here and elsewhere) as to what exactly the change was. The only thing I've found is a few news articles that say the areas are now 'opened up' to foreign tourists.
Does anyone know if this means you no longer need a PAP? Or does it just mean that if you get a PAP, you can now visit a few more places that previously…
I am planning a trip to Himachal Pradesh this summer - will be travelling independently with my wife. We are considering spending a few days in Parvati Valley (Kasol, Manikaran, maybe the Khirganga trek) but are somewhat put-off by stories about missing tourists, dodgy types hanging around and the local drug scene.
Would anybody with a recent experience be able to share it? Did you feel safe during your visit? Did you have any unpleasant encounters with drug dealers, corrupt cops or other…
Am travelling to Dharamsala for a week and then I plan to take a few treks around, in the most suitable time. Anyone or any group travelling during the same time please let me know.
Hi all, working on my itinerary, I think I have everything kind of laid out. But, bearing in mind that apparently I'm going to get soaked for the July monsoons, I wonder if it's worth visiting the following places. It would be great if you could give me your opinion about the activities that can be done there and for how many days...
- Kollam (that would be a one stop to go to Munroe island or Alleppey)
