Lonely Planet review
10km south of Tirumayam, in the backstreets of small Kanadukathan, are the wedding-cake houses of the Chettiars, an interrelated clan of bankers, merchants and traders. The mansions of the community are decked out in the cosmopolitan goods bought home by Chettiars during their extensive trading forays: Belgian chandeliers, Italian granite, Burmese teak and artwork from around the world. To get a feel for the royal life, book a night in Visalam which has been restored and is a frankly fantastic heritage house. It's pricey, but hey: you get to spend the night in a living Indian palace.
