Getting there & away
The bus stand is very central – within walking distance to the temple and accommodation. There are hourly buses to Chennai; bus 157 (Rs 75, seven hours) is the quickest. Puducherry (Rs 21, two hours) and Kumbakonam (Rs 22, 2½ hours) buses run regularly. There are also direct buses to Madurai (Rs 120, eight hours, five daily).
Chidambaram is on a metre gauge rail line rather than a main line but the train is useful for getting to Kumbakonam, where you can change trains for Thanjavur or Trichy. There’s one daily express train to Kumbakonam (2nd class/sleeper Rs 31/49, two hours) and several passenger trains. The station is a 20-minute walk southeast of the temple (Rs 30 by autorickshaw).
