Dangers & annoyances
Getting around is likely to be your biggest problem in Chennai. Autorickshaw drivers are tough to bargain with (meters aren’t used) and may dispute an agreed-upon fare on arrival. Avoid giving money up front, even if you’ve hired the auto for the day.
Drivers may offer Rs 50 one-hour ‘sightseeing’ rides to anywhere in the city, but usually this means you’ll be ferried to craft emporiums: don’t fall for it.
If you have a serious problem with a driver, mentioning a call to the traffic police (103) can defuse the conflict.
