Hill sights in India

  1. A

    Hari Parbat Hill

Hindus believe that towering Hari Parbat Hill was the island where Sharika (Durga) defeated the lake demon Jalodabhava, while Muslims pay homage at the vast Makhdoom Sahib shrine, dedicated to a Sufi saint who helped the spread of Islam in Kashmir. A flight of stone steps climbs up to the shrine and descends towards Dal Lake, passing the ruined mosque of Akhund Mulla Shah, built by Shah Jahan's son Dara Shikoh in 1649.

The hill is topped by the imposing Hari Parbat Fort, now occupied by the Indian Army. Around the base of the hill are the remains of the old city walls, built by Akbar in the 1590s.

    Nature Interpretation Centre

The Nature Interpretation Centre hosts what must be the world's most educational badminton court. Surrounding the court are a number of well-organised dioramas depicting the effects of human activity on the environment. It's an easy walk from the town centre. About 450m further up the hill is the small but serene Rishi Bankim Chandra Park (also known as Kalimpong Park).

  3. Brahmajuni Hill

One thousand stone steps leads to the top of the Brahmajuni Hill, 1km southwest of the Vishnupad Temple, where Buddha is said to have preached the fire sermon. The view from the top of Gaya and the surrounding plains is expansive and there's a small temple and cave here.

    Nabagraha Mandir

Several hilltops are crowned by minor curiosities. One-such is Nabagraha Mandir, northeast of centre by autorickshaw, famed as a centre of astrology. Beyond its aggressive monkey guardians, a darkly atmospheric inner sanctum holds nine ancient stone Shiva lingams.
