What is Chai
Blog: Indian Bazaars - 6 January 2012
And, why is the chai so much a part of our lives? In India, we believe that time is cyclic and in the many years we live before we are reborn again, the chai is at the core of our existence. It is the cup of chai (tea) that helps us mark time in our homes, in our streets, in our marketplaces. Every home offers its guest a cup of tea. Every street corner offers its visitors a glass of chai. In the marketplace, the chai creates the social space that people need as an introspection, an interaction or a sharing of experiences.

Memorial to a loved Pet
Blog: A Wandering Mind - 27 July 2011
I was wandering with Samhith around Gulab Bagh, the huge garden where the Udaipur Zoo is located. We had time to kill before we could catch the bus which would take us back to Mumbai, we had checked out of our room, and Shankar had already flown back the day before.

Asian Koel
Blog: A Wandering Mind - 12 July 2011
The call of the cuckoo or koel is one of the nicest to hear. The bird itself is not so nice. For one, it is a lazy bird, laying its eggs in another's nest, leaving the other one to care for it unknowingly. Also, the male looks just like a crow, which does nothing to improve its looks! The female looks more beautiful, a combination of brown and white which helps in camouflage. However, this also makes it harder to spot. I have seen koels in our colony, but never close, and certainly not close enough to get a decent photograph.

Udaipur city
Blog: Indian Bazaars - 8 April 2011
There are times when you think about how travel has changed you and how places become memories and how every recollection makes beauty rise again to change you one more time. I had just begun to meander that morning by the Pichola Lake wanting to simply walk along the streets of Udaipur city in that light that I had discovered the day before, a light that seemed to belong only to the morning, the light that fell on the Lake Palace, creating most of its charm, the light that let the water dance on the walls of the many pavilions beyond.

Photo of the Week – Udaipur, India

Udaipur, India – Whirling Women In honor of the Passports with Purpose Fundraising project, I’ve chosen one of my favorite photos from India this week. A last minute decision to go to the nightly cultural show in Udaipur yielded great photographic results. I arrived late and they sat me right up front, but it was [...]

A Little Travel Memory…Swirling Skirts and Indian Dancing
Blog: A Little Adrift - A RTW Travelogue - 1 November 2010
Travel Memories: Indian Cultural Dance in Udaipur A local artist I met in Udaipur, India (who essentially proposed marriage a few days later) insisted that I attend this cultural dance. The dancing was gorgeous and this photo so perfectly points out one of my favorite aspects of India – the vibrant colors and ornate decorations. My would-be suitor was waiting for me right after the performance, to ensure that I enjoyed the dancing and music, and we followed it the performance the only way you follow up anything in India – with a ...

A Package From India: From Cloth To Sealing Wax
Blog: Quillcards - 28 April 2010
And Now For Something Completely Different The iconic Monty Python’s Flying Circus TV show that aired in the ’60s and ’70s promised viewers towards the beginning of each of its comedy sketches before it set off on its wonderfully crazy path, “And now for something completely different.” I am reminded of this slogan as I try to [...]A Package From India: From Cloth To Sealing Wax is a post from: Quillcards

Monkeying Around in Udaipur
Blog: Twenty-Something Travel - 15 April 2010
Last time we heard from Alex Budak he was exploring a temple full of sacred rats in India. He’s returned to share another of his bizarre stories (he seems to attract them). While less horrifying than the last, this one is definitely PG-13: Scarves, rugs, and tea boxes — to be honest I was pretty bored [...]

Car Hire in Rajasthan, What Were We Thinking?
Blog: Canada's Adventure Couple - 20 January 2010
Dave and I really can be idiot travelers sometimes. We like to think that we are savvy and know what is going on, but sometimes we can just fall for things way too easily. Here’s the scoop… We like independent travel. We like our own schedule and we don’t like to rush through anything. If we like a place, we may stay for five or six days. If we don’t we will move on.

There is nothing more exciting than coming into a town to find out that you have arrived in time for a yearly festival. How lucky we felt when we heard that in Shilpgram, a mere two kilometres away from Udaipur, there was an arts festival taking place as we speak. Dancers, performers, artists and trades people from all over India have come to Shipgram for a 10 day festival to show off their talents.

He has been leasing this property for 9 years and running the guest house while learning all about the hotel business. Years ago, his father bought this piece of land for 40,000 rupees to build a house. The Luck Runs Out
Blog: Passed Ports: images and anecdotes from our travels - 31 December 2009
After our visit to the Taj Mahal, we headed to Udaipur via overnight train. (We decided to skip Jaisalmer, the first stop for many on the Rajasthan loop, based on recommendations from several friends). Udaipur is an architecturally stunning city, beautiful from afar; but, like so much of India, it all falls apart up close. Covered [...]

Lady in the Land of Kings
Blog: A Lady in London - 7 November 2009
Continued from Lady and the Leopard...Destination #5: GaltaAfter my exciting albeit tiger-less safari in Ranthambore National Park, I headed back to Jaipur for a quick stop in Galta. Galta, a collection of 250-year-old temples, is on the outskirts of Jaipur's city center, and is a peaceful haven from the chaotic Pink City.
