Lonely Planet review for Gallery Pristine
More showroom than gallery, this collection proves that Shahid Parvez and friends are the pick of Udaipur's rich crop of contemporary artists.

Enjoyable, accessible, affordable

I have been visiting India & Udaipur since 2001. I stumbled across Gallery Pristine in its first location on the street between Lake Pichola and the temple near the Palace on that first trip.
I fell in love with a painting that I stupidly talked myself out of buying (a decision I have regretted for a decade now) and so when I revisited Udaipur in 2003, I went straight back to the gallery to see if by some chance it was still there. It wasn't.
However trying to find the painting meant that I had to have a series of conversations with the people running the gallery and I discovered that were all members of the same family and almost all of them were/are artists. The painting i had seen and then lost was by one of the women in the family).
Over the next 3 trips to India I have visited Udaipur each time and each time I have spent more time getting to know the family. In particular I have gotten to know Shahid Parvez and I now collect his works.
I always enjoy my time in the galleries and I have seen a number of customers wandering in and out in that time. I have never felt pressured to buy anything in any of the now three locations that Gallery pristine has and I have never seen anyone in the galleries apply any pressure to anyone to buy anything either.
Gallery pristine does not sell the standard Mughal Miniatures like almost every other ‘art gallery’ in town and on that first trip they were the only gallery selling contemporary works of art. I am pleased to see there are now a number of contemporary art galleries in Udaipur and I have visited them as well.
In all honesty I think that the growth of the contemporary art scene in Udaipur is due in significant part to the work of the people who run and exhibit at Gallery Pristine and I would have ne hesitation recommending that you stop by and visit. If you meet Shahid, tell him that Malcolm from Sydney said “Hello”.
