  1. Serving Water to the Thirsty

    Blog: A Wandering Mind - 26 May 2012

It is said that the best charity is giving food to the hungry and water to the thirsty. The latter is especially true in the hot summer months, when a parched throat can make life feel miserable, and nothing is more welcome than a glass of cool water. All over India, there are people who take this literally, and serve water on the roads in summer, free of cost.

    Blog: Canada's Adventure Couple - 10 April 2012

The barren landscape over the Thar desert in Rajasthan makes for an incredible background especially at sunset. You can just see Pakistan in the distance.

  3. An Artist at Work in India

    Blog: Canada's Adventure Couple - 3 March 2012

In Rajasthan, India we came across a friendly man making delicious steamed milk. The guys that boil this milk to be used in chai are true artists. They mix and scoop the milk drawing long lines of liquid through the air. The more skilled they are, the longer the line between the cup and the [...]

  5. Achalgarh - of a Fort and Temple, Bulls and Demons....

    Blog: A Wandering Mind - 12 January 2012

A bull which drove away invaders, three buffaloes said to be demons, a lake once said to have been filled with ghee and a temple once covered in lime to protect it – we couldn’t help but smile as we listened to these stories about Achalgarh. We had a day free at Mount Abu and were in the mood to explore, so we headed out for the tourist circuit, trusting our driver to take us to some interesting places.

  6. What is Chai

    Blog: Indian Bazaars - 6 January 2012

And, why is the chai so much a part of our lives? In India, we believe that time is cyclic and in the many years we live before we are reborn again, the chai is at the core of our existence. It is the cup of chai (tea) that helps us mark time in our homes, in our streets, in our marketplaces. Every home offers its guest a cup of tea. Every street corner offers its visitors a glass of chai. In the marketplace, the chai creates the social space that people need as an introspection, an interaction or a sharing of experiences.

    Blog: A Wandering Mind - 27 July 2011

I was wandering with Samhith around Gulab Bagh, the huge garden where the Udaipur Zoo is located. We had time to kill before we could catch the bus which would take us back to Mumbai, we had checked out of our room, and Shankar had already flown back the day before.

  19. Asian Koel

    Blog: A Wandering Mind - 12 July 2011

The call of the cuckoo or koel is one of the nicest to hear. The bird itself is not so nice. For one, it is a lazy bird, laying its eggs in another's nest, leaving the other one to care for it unknowingly. Also, the male looks just like a crow, which does nothing to improve its looks! The female looks more beautiful, a combination of brown and white which helps in camouflage. However, this also makes it harder to spot. I have seen koels in our colony, but never close, and certainly not close enough to get a decent photograph.

  22. Magic!

    Blog: A Wandering Mind - 20 June 2011

On our recent visit to Mount Abu, we walked to the lake to spend the evening. As we were awaiting our turn for the boat ride, a young boy came up to Shankar and said that he would show us some magic tricks. These days, I  don't have much patience with young chaps who accost us at tourist destinations, and would have ignored the chap, but Shankar said, "Come on, let's see what he does." So off we went, towards a slightly less crowded section of the park, and proceeded to see just what is meant by 'sleight of hand'!
