Seeking Practical Information about Phone, Electricity, and Money

I apologize if others have recently asked these questions - as I did not find the answers easily on Thorn Tree (but may not be adept at searching!) The FAQ was started 11-years ago, so I am also worried that information may be outdated. I am traveling to India in December from the United States - and hoping to get some practical information:
1. I have a Verizon cell phone (Droid). Do I need to do anything to be able to use it in India? I will likely want to turn off data so that I am not…

First time travellers - starting with India.

Hello, i am posted on here several months ago about my plans to travel with my partner and work our way around the world. Well it has all started to phase from dreams to reality as we have booked half the flights on a multiflex ticket.

our first destination is India, we fly into Mumbai late January, have three days then fly up to Delhi (was cheaper than flying into Delhi straight away) before working our way around. We hope to do Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, Goa and Kerela, then back up to Mumbai where…

Checking in and proving marriage?

My husband and I are going to India. We booked a hotel in Mumbai for when we arrive. At the bottom of the booking.com reservation it says:
Please note that the property requires a valid ID proof at the time of check-in. In case of couples, a valid marriage proof is required.
We have traveled extensively around the world and have never had to prove marriage. (Our last names are the same and we are 71 and 65 years old.)
1. Is this common in India?
2. Will the hotel really enforce it?
3.…

Come to God's Own Dry Country

Apologies to Rajesh who twittered that line first, probably...

But.... Blow to Kerala bar owners, HC upholds ban on liquor in the state.

This'll turn it into another Gujarat, full of smuggling and black marketing of alcohol.

Jaipur to Jodhpur by morning train

I've been trying to book a train from Jaipur to Jodhpur on around 26 Dec 2014.

Cleartrip lists this one: Jp Ju Superfast Express (22478) which departs at 6 am. Perfect but it seems like it's not running.

MakeMyTrip lists this one: Puri Ju Express, but it only seems to have sleeper berths and it's not listed on Cleartrip at all.

Is there some kind of secret to booking one of these trains?

Bramaphutra cruising.

Which options are of boat transport in this river in Assam? I've only crossing the river in Guwahati. After Kaziranga, perhaps I'll have two or three extra days before arriving in Guwahati for taking a plane for coming back home.
