How smelly is the Hooghly River ?

Am tempted to lash out and have a night or two at the Flotel Hotel in Kolkata which is a floating hotel moored in the Hooghly River opposite Howrah Station.

But then I thought how smelly is the river? After all the river has flown down past several hundred million people and their livestock....

PS- and how noisy is these upmarket places with large restaurants/banquet halls/bars at the weekends. I dont mind people carrying on until about midnight, but not after that, no thanks!

Shekhawati

In spite of the many visitors that Rajasthan gets, the Shekhawati area is largely overlooked by tourists.

This is a shame, as there are some unique sights here, and having them to yourself is an additional treat.

I wrote short trip report of a recent trip to the area. I hope it will help others to discover it.

Ashrams suggestions in South India? I'm lost searching!!

Hi everyone!

I'm going to South India, alone, January 6th to April 6th (2015 of course ;).

Anyone would have suggestions for an Ashram in South India?

I I'm looking for an interesting Ashram (or more than one). Meditation is primary focus. Yoga could be nice, but I'm a beginner, so not one for advanced yogis. I'm interested in the body-mind connection, Ayurveda, etc. I'm interested in India community too!

I'm currently doing Ashrams internet hunting and start to wonder how many more hours…

Rajasthan Trains: Jaipur - Ajmer - Pushkar - Jodpur - Jaisalmer

Hi everyone! I am travelling through North India and want to see Jaipur, Ajmer, Pushkar, Jodpur, and Jaisalmer. (Open to suggestions for other places in the area.)

I've read that trains in this area don't need to be booked in advance, but I am wary of this. Is it worth taking a train between Ajmer and Pushkar or should we use a bus? And, finally, is there a train from Jaisalmer back to Delhi?

How long would you recommend for this journey?

Is anyone interested in going to Ladakh around 10-Nov for 10 days

Is anyone interested in going to Ladakh around 10-Nov for 10 days.

Temp will be around -6C. So not that cold - it gets 0C in North India even in the plains.

The high passes will be closed but Ladakh valley should be accessible. We will fly from Delhi on non-stop flight to Leh.

Places to visit: Hemis, Lamayuru, Thikse and other monasteries. Nubra valley and TsoMorriri might be accessible but cannot be guaranteed. We might stay in Hemis national park for 2-3 days and try our luck at seeing…

Im walking from Madurai to Kochi.

Hi,

I visit South India early next year. I am going to walk from Madurai to Kochi.

I would follow principal roads and walk approximately 20 miles each day. I’m in the very early stages of planning but could anyone suggest how long this walk might take?

My inspiration is Alastair Humphreys who walked across India following the course of a holy river. I too would love to walk coast to coast but as my time is limited I plan to start in Madurai.

Any advice, tips and recommendations would be…
