Lonely Planet review for Rashtriya Manav Sangrahalaya

A kind of tribal safari park, only without the tribes, the open-air, hillside complex Rashtriya Manav Sangrahalaya is possibly your best chance to get a taste of India’s 450-plus tribes without actually visiting an Adivasi village. Authentic-looking dwellings – built and maintained by Adivasis using traditional tools and materials – dot the hillside. There’s a mythological trail and a more conventional museum on the hilltop.

Best place to see the whole of India at one place

    kishoreiitkgp recommends this,

This place is fabulous. Its the best place to see the whole of traditional and cultural India is a single place. Being the only museum of its kind, its very big and it took almost two days for us to see everything in it properly. We love the city also. The city of bhopal is very beautiful with clean and wide road and a lot of lakes. The lakes offer boating and other water entertainment. Mostly we did love the nearby location of Bhopal like Bhimvedka, the ancient cave paintings. The stay was very comfortable at jahanuma palace hotel just on a hill near the big lake.

    Excellent ethnography museum and park

    keni recommends this,

This is a must-see museum / park for anyone interested in ethnography or anthropology. I only had time to visit the outdoor village displays, comprising typical village homes from all around India; those alone warrant a visit. There is also a short trail along the cliff, passing neolithic cave paintings; it was closed when I was there.

The museum is a bit isolated. Arrange for your transport to wait for you or arrange come back for you at the museum. If you get off at Gate #1 (across the road from the lake), check out the desert and coastal village displays; then it's a 30-40 minute walk to the museum and main displays. Gate #2 is harder to find but is just a 5 minute walk from the museum.

To see it all, you need the best part of a day. At least see the museum and the outdoor village displays. Light food and refreshment is available at the open-air canteen.
