Looks can be deceptive. Some eye-catchingly smart facades mask lacklustre, mustily disappointing rooms. Other very survivable places are hidden within buildings that look like crumbling wrecks. Decent hotel accommodation in Kolkata often costs about the same as in Western Europe, so if you want to pay less than ₹700 for a room, don’t expect to enjoy the experience. Even in many midrange hotels, peeling paint, loose wires, battered furniture and damp patches come as standard. Many cheaper hotels lock their gates by midnight so if you’re planning a night on the tiles, check if there’s a late-entry procedure.
