Lonely Planet review for Tantra
Considered Kolkata’s top club, contemporary sounds throb through the single dance floor and not-so-chilled chill-out zone around a central-island bar with an overhead observation bridge.

Surreal

There was something a bit surreal about getting dressed up to go clubbing in a 5 star hotel when we were staying in a grotty non AC hotel and eating street food but it was worth splashing out for. It was our last night in Calcutta so I decided it was time to take off my grubby clothes and put on a cocktail dress! I'd read about this place before coming that's why I happened to have a cocktail dress in my rucksack! We were perhaps a little over dressed compared to the other guests but it certainly paid off. We were ushered passed the security checks, we didn't have to pay entrance and then we were taken to the VIP balcony. The DJ was surprisingly good and the cocktails (Rs550 each) were a nice change from Kingfisher! We were warned before by a local who we met in the Fairlawn hotel bar that Tantra is full of seedy, single men but luckily I was with my boyfriend so it wasn't a problem. Although it was a pricey night out by Indian standards, it was worth experiencing how the other half lives in Calcutta.
