Dangers & annoyances

Women are likely to grow tired of the parade of male Indian daytrippers who stroll along the beach in the hope of glimpsing female flesh – it’s more annoying than dangerous, however. Theft does occur, both from hotels and the beach. Lock the doors and windows and watch your possessions at the beach.

There are strong rips at both ends of Lighthouse Beach that carry away several swimmers every year. Swim only between the flags in the area patrolled by lifeguards.

Kovalam has frequent blackouts and the footpaths further back behind Lighthouse Beach are unlit, so carry a torch (flashlight) after dark.
