The best of three old-town guesthouses, the Phukthar is above a small ethnobotanical museum and an unfinished row of shops. Good-value rooms, some with tiny private bathrooms, share a restaurant counterpointing Tibet and Bob Marley.

There’s a simple camping ground opposite the Tourist Office, which has an acceptable Tourist Bungalow.
Good-looking, well-furnished new rooms seem oddly forgotten beneath Padum’s most glitzy restaurant (mains Rs40 to Rs85, beer Rs120). Some smell musty.
Room standards vary, but the pleasant setting around a sheltered garden courtyard plus a convivial restaurant (mains Rs45 to Rs100) makes the Ibex a justifiably popular choice.
