It doesn’t look like much from the outside but Embassy is a cosy timber-lined restaurant with fabulous views over Shimla, especially at night when the city lights are on. The menu runs to Indian, Chinese and continental, with good biryanis and a tasty chicken curry.

This reliable little traveller cafe does a good line of enchiladas, burritos and nachos, as well Tibetan, Chinese and pizzas. Good desserts, too.

In the atrium on the roof of Hotel Combermere, but entered straight off the Mall, Sol serves an interesting blend of Mexican, Italian and Mediterranean dishes. Try the crispy prawn with cornflakes, or filling enchiladas.
