To help foreigners, from today they are allowed to exchange Rs5000 per week in old notes (and they'll probably waste 3 passport pages noting it).

And until Dec 15th, govt entities will be accepting old 500s (only) which will better the acceptance on the street.

EDIT: Making this a sticky topic to consolidate some of the discussion, as we now have nearly twenty currency topics in the past two weeks.
Please use this topic if you can, for all your new updates & questions about the currency

Hey all,

there are heaps of threads about this already, but it's very hard to compile all the most recent info. I have 3 weeks solo in India in July, flying into and out of Delhi.

I'd love to see a mix of things - of course the Taj but then some quieter, smaller towns perhaps, or some walking (weather may be too hot?)

Thanks for your advice, I need to get booking those trains!

I hope to leave next week for New Zealand and slowly make my way to India. I did research on where to go in India and there are just too many places listed. Especially in a country as hectic as India and considering there are a lot of cities in India that are not pretty, I really just want to visit the highlights/most worthwhile destinations (Taj Mahal, for example). From the list below, which places would you definitely visit versus definitely would not versus places that are so-so? It is…

I'm travelling to Goa very soon for yoga teacher training (being picked up from the airport by the school), and will stay for 10 days afterward. I'm a bit nervous about travelling alone, but am certain that I'll make friends during the training, and hopeful that I'll have found a travel companion or two by the end!! I've booked a bed in a female dorm at a hostel called Summer (by the hostel crowd) in Palolem for the first couple days following - has anyone heard of/been to this place? I've…

Hi all,

I've gone through the forum but haven't found an answer to my particular question, many thanks to anyone who can answer it!

I'm traveling to India with my boyfriend on April 7th, just for 2 weeks. We don't have an itinerary yet but we'd like to see elephants! My research has thrown up Mudumalai wildlife sanctuary, Indira gandi wildlife sanctuary, Thekkady / Periyar national reserve. What do people recommend?

Thank you!

Maria

Hello,
I have a quick 3 day stop over in New Delhi in August. Here is my itinerary.

Day 1: I arrive around 6:30am in the morning, this will give me the entire day to go exploring
Day 2: Day trip to the Taj Mahal
Day 3: Arrive in varanasi arrive at 9:30am
Day 4: Leave Varanasi going to Cairo in the afternoon, late evening.

Since i'm on a short-time, I'm thinking about paying for a private day tour which I found could run around $60 for (8) hours. I would use this on day one:
For Varanasi, I'm…

Hello,

We just bought 2AC train tickets from Cochin to Goa overnight on March 31. Well, at least we think we did.

It was hard to hear through the window and I had trouble understanding the accent, but it seems we don't really have a seat yet but should come to the station an hour before the train leaves to get a seat assignment. Something about waiting lists and foreigner allotment. I tried to read up on it some but very confusing, I understand there are some last minute tickets but don't…

I am planning a 4 week visit to India to visit the northern area in that time. I would fly in and out of Delhi and in between visit Jaipur, Agra Orcha, Khajuraho, Varanasi and hopefully Leh in Ladakh. Is March a good time to visit from a climate point of view? Interests are the spiritual side of India, the architecture and local culture. Is that enough time to visit this region? I would also like to include a 3 - 4 day visit to a ashram or buddhist retreat. Thanks in advance
