Lonely Planet review for Laxmi Vilas Palace

Laxmi Vilas Palace was built in full-throttle 19th-century Indo-Saracenic flourish for Rs6 million. After purchasing your ticket at the Maharaja Fateh Singh Museum head north along Nehru Rd to the second gate (after the entrance to the golf course and before the grand main entrance to the palace). At the palace, pick up an audio guide (included in the admission) and have a leisurely sticky beak at the elaborate interiors of the palace. The Naulakhi Well, a fine step well, is 50m north of the palace.

A stunning palace in middle of the city

    parikhdolly recommends this,

I have visited the Darbar Hall on various occasions for classical music concerts and it has been an experience of a lifetime. I have enjoyed walking around the palace grounds and enjoy the sounds of the peacocks here.

To see around the palace has changed a lot since my visit

    nayanshahbhatewar recommends this,

I visited Laxmi Villas back in August 1999. Back then you needed to go to Indumati Mahal, Rajmahal Road, Opposite Laxmi Villas, to get the entrance ticket priced at Rs100 (for all visitors). This is the official office of HRH Maharaja RanjitsinhRao Gaekwad. I was lucky enough to meet HRH, as he was in office. Got chance to take photos with him and converse with him as well. After which, I took photos of Indumati from outside (normally not allowed but because I visited HRH I was allowed to do so). Went to Laxmi VIllas afterwards and got shown around and Naulakhi Well by one of the staffs (a friendly older gentleman who was the official Sword Maker and Repairer for the Royal Armoury). All in all an amazing experience, for brought back childhood memories of visiting the Palace for various parties and showings.
(There was no Cafe back then, so dont know if has changed since - but that didnt bother me as the experience was exhalarating that you forget everything else along with the time)

    A marvelous experience

    bonitovida recommends this,

The palace is very old but very well maintained. A part of the palace has been converted into a golf club and part of it is used by the royal family. Huge, green golf course surrounds the palace. You can visit the palace with a average entry free of Rs. 150 per person. You can avail of a personal guide or take the audio tour. The audio tour is very good and interesting. The intricate designs on pillars, walls and ceilings are amazing. Artefacts from China, Egypt, Italy and Greece adorn various places in the palace. Some rooms that are open to the public are the artillery room, front room, throne room and a few other mail halls. Beautiful stain glass windows and paintings cover various portions of the walls. Photography is not allowed inside. Another interesting portion is the open courtyard. We could take photographs here.

The royal family is soon going to give away the palace to be converted into a hotel. So, see it before that happens.

The entire audio tour took as 1 hour or a little more. We found the entire place very captivating and couldn’t stop singing its praises!
