Panaji’s not a city brimming with good budget accommodation, and most of what you’ll find at the lower end of the accommodation spectrum is fairly poor quality or, at best, entirely forgettable. If you’re looking for rock-bottom budget, the best options run the length of 31st January Rd. Don’t expect atmospheric old Portuguese haunts: most consist of nothing much but a cell-like room, no view and a 9am or earlier checkout, with doubles going for around ₹700. Inspect a few before you decide. Some are full of bachelors where it would be a bit odd – and potentially problematic – for women to stay, so if unsure, ask at the reception if the hotel is a ‘family’ place.
