To help foreigners, from today they are allowed to exchange Rs5000 per week in old notes (and they'll probably waste 3 passport pages noting it).
And until Dec 15th, govt entities will be accepting old 500s (only) which will better the acceptance on the street.
EDIT: Making this a sticky topic to consolidate some of the discussion, as we now have nearly twenty currency topics in the past two weeks.
Please use this topic if you can, for all your new updates & questions about the currency…

I am currently planning my trip to India which will take place from October through February/March depending on my funds towards the end. I've been trying to figure out where to start (North to South or South to North) in order to keep the best weather conditions on my side. I realize that since it's such a large country each region has it's own unique climate and I won't be able to hit "perfect" (non-monsoon) weather the whole time but I'd love to know which itinerary direction would be…
I've never been to India and am really excited about visiting. I'm trying to work out how to structure my time there.
My free time situation is like this:
2017 Sept-Nov: Currently have travel plans for Africa, but could be changed if convinced
2017 Dec-2018 mid Mar (~3.5 months): Free
2018 mid Mar-mid May: Not free
2018 mid May-mid Aug (~3 months): Free
My main interests over these periods are to visit SE Asia (I've only been to Thailand so far) and India. I like wildlife/trekking/photography and…
I am spending 1.5 days next weekend in Varanasi. Have made a hotel reservation, on river close to Vishwanath Temple. Have been researching and seems like morning river tour makes sense, any advice on specifics? I am ok booking something private, also curious if I should do evening as well. Any other tips welcome, plan on just walking around, exploring and taking photos.
thanks for any advice in advance
Hi, had applied for tourist visa for my wife and kid on 28th Feb'17. It has been almost one month and still status is "Under Process". I don't know what they mean by that. And when would we get the visa. Any such experiences??
I will be visiting India in a cruise (Cochin, New Mangalore, Goa and Mumbai). I only have one day to visit each city, so the time is very limited and I need to be onboard before dinner.
What are your suggestions about the places I need to visit in each city?
ok, so my friend and I are flying to India may 1st. we know it's terribly hot, so that's why we need some help with our general itinerary. we'll be flying in to New Delhi. as I see it there are 4 main options:
heading straight to the himaylays. hill stations. dharamsala, leh, Shimla, rishikesh, manali, almora, nainital and so on. my questions for this option: spending 2 months in this area (EXCLUDING Jammu and Kashmir, as Israelis it won't be too safe) would be good? enough things to…
So, me and my friend have decided that once we graduate we’d like to travel India for three months(ish) but we’re struggling to finalise our itinerary so any advice would be very appreciated!
This is what we’re thinking so far:
Fly into Kolkata: 2 nights here
Bodhgaya: 2 nights (Rajgir for one day)
Varanasi: 2 nights
Khajuraho: 2 nights
Agra: 1 night
New Delhi: 4 nights
Shimla: 2 nights
Amritsar: 1 night
Jaipur: 3 nights (Day trip to Ranthambhore)
Pushkar: 2 nights (Day trip to Ajmer)
I talked to nearly 100 people about Demonitization on a recent excursioin to India. Delhi businessmen are saying, “Tourists are fickle when something goes wrong in a country, such as a rise in terrorism or India’s shortage of available currency. Instead of traveling to India, people are going elsewhere such as to Thailand, Malaysia, Nepal, and Sri Lanka.”
Demonitization took place on November 9, 2016 when President Modi made a sudden move that declared all 500 and 1000 Rupee notes illegal—86%…
