What is Chai
Blog: Indian Bazaars - 6 January 2012
And, why is the chai so much a part of our lives? In India, we believe that time is cyclic and in the many years we live before we are reborn again, the chai is at the core of our existence. It is the cup of chai (tea) that helps us mark time in our homes, in our streets, in our marketplaces. Every home offers its guest a cup of tea. Every street corner offers its visitors a glass of chai. In the marketplace, the chai creates the social space that people need as an introspection, an interaction or a sharing of experiences.

Photo Essay: Life and Movement in Delhi
Blog: Girl, Unstoppable - 25 April 2011
On my last day in India, I hired an autorickshaw driver to take me around to some of Delhi’s main sites in the morning. Getting from place to place in Delhi provided a great glimpse into everyday life: A vendor finishes setting up his apple stand. Behind him, the shops are just beginning to get [...]

Relieved in Smoggy Delhi
Blog: Girl, Unstoppable - 19 April 2011
Delhi has quite possibly the most polluted air my lungs have ever inhaled. So it might seem strange for me to say that along the northern route I took in India, Delhi was the place that gave me a breath of fresh air. Metaphorically, of course. The first sign that I might like Delhi came [...]

On Day 1 either take a tour, we did one with Rao Travel which covered 8 major sights. Alternatively take the tourist Hop on Hop off bus and see the major sights on offer. Both of these options cost just Rs300.

Mysticism in an Indian Bazaar
Blog: freewheelings.com - 6 April 2011
I’ve avoided speaking much on matters of faith here at freewheelings. You might expect my views to be somewhat unconventional and I imagine that they are. It’s hard to tell what another individual truly believes and how those beliefs manifest themselves in their experiences. I’m about to give it a whirl. To underscore the importance of [...]

Holi Bazaar
Blog: Indian Bazaars - 26 March 2011
I had NOT been chasing the Holi Bazaar, but it did seem like it was walking just a few steps in front of me wherever I went. As I went from one city to another over the last three weeks, I was not to forget at any time that the festival of Holi was nearing. In Ahmedabad, walking around the Raipur Darwaja area and asking about which streets were sellers of what goods, I had been told I was just a bit early to see the Holi colours.

Binsar - Part 11 - Nainital
Blog: A Wandering Mind - 15 May 2010
We had a big decision to make as our last day at Binsar approached. Our train to Delhi was at night, and we had to check out by 10 AM! What was to be done all day long? On one hand, I wanted to buy something for everyone back home, for I hadn’t been anywhere near a shop in a week! On the other hand, I also wanted to visit some nice place, something which would wrap up my vacation in a memorable

Photo of the Week – Delhi
Blog: Ottsworld - 19 March 2010
Bucket Bath Delhi, India While volunteering in India, I often walked around the slum neighborhoods to see the family culture. Family homes don’t have bathrooms, and baths are taken outside in front of the house with buckets. It didn’t seem to phase the kids, as this was a great way to cool down on a hot Delhi [...]

One Last Namaste
Blog: the reX-Files.ca - 18 March 2010
One last time to write, one last chapter before I head for home. The thought of home is more appealing as that day draws nearer and we are rich with memories. We have managed a traditional thanksgiving dinner here in Tlell and Rex's flat with a two burner hotplate and a toaster oven with the cooking squeezed between the scheduled power outages.

Holy Water!
Blog: the reX-Files.ca - 18 March 2010
We left Agra a few days ago to begin the drive through the Rajasthan countryside with our trusty driver Sovran at the wheel. "The monsoon have not been good this year" he says pointing at the dry landscape. "Many of the fields will not be planted". The last of the millet crop is being taken off, and only a few dried squash vines remain. Water is scarce. Men herd sheep and goats further to graze and women work in the fields gleaning the last of a meager crop.

Big Bad Delhi
Blog: Canada's Adventure Couple - 13 March 2010
Ooh, Delhi. It is so scary. Pickpockets, thieves, street kids and poverty. Everyone has told us to get out of Delhi, so as usual, we went into the city with our back against the wall expecting the worse. Delhi's not so bad. Sure, the PaharGanj area is filthy and over crowded. Sure the train station is intimidating with its masses of people crowding the platform and sure it is huge!
